Yavatmal to join 50 crore tree plantation drive in state

Yavatmal: The Forest Circle of Yavatmal consisting of Yavatmal, Washim and Akola districts in Vidarbha is set to expedite the targeted figure of 50 crore tree plantation across the state within the set time frame.
According to the Chief Conservator of Forest of Yavatmal circle Govind Chavan, the State Forest Department has set a target of planting 50 crore saplings across the State in the next couple of years to maintain the alarmingly depleting forest cover in the State.
“The department has given us the target of 23.79 lakh tree plantation in the three districts of Yavatmal, Washim and Akola,” Chief Conservator of Forest of Yavatmal circle Govind Chavan said, adding that the drive would be carried out during July 1 -7 next.
34 different departments would participate in the drive besides the NGOs and individual households in the circle, he said, adding that 50 varieties of indigenous species of trees are set to be planted in the drive.
To make it a success, we have set up ‘Van Mahotsav Kendra’ where the saplings would be produced and the same would be distributed to the public under the program of ‘ Rope aaplya daari’ (saplings at your doorstep), Chavan said, adding that under the program, each house would get five saplings and each Housing Society would get 25 saplings to be planted and nurtured by them.
During 2016, over 17 lakh saplings have been planted in Yavatmal district of which 91 per cent are alive, he claimed.
