Woman jumps from building to oppose anti encroachment drive, dies

Pune: In order to oppose anti encroachment drive in Pimple Gurav area of Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation (PCMC) in Pune, a 30 year old woman jumped from fourth floor of a building on January 23 afternoon. The woman succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment.
Devibai Ram Pawar is survived by husband, elder daughter and a son. She was a resident of Devkar park area in Pimple Gurav where anti encroachment department of PCMC was carrying out a drive on January 23. The incident took place at around 1.45 pm.
According to police officers from Sangvi police station, Devibai along with other residents of Devkar park were opposing the action by the anti encroachment department. “The team of anti encroachment department was razing illegal structures with the help of cranes which the residents were opposing. In the afternoon, when the team moved close to a building where Devibai’s family stays, the residents opposed the action there also. When the PCMC officials tried to make their way to the building, Devibai went inside the building and before anybody could realize, she jumped from fourth floor of the building,” a police officer from Sangvi police station said.
The 30 year old woman sustained serious injuries and she was rushed to a hospital where she succumbed to injuries. Meanwhile, the mob opposing the anti encroachment drive became furious after Devibai jumped from building and they started pelting stones on the anti encroachment team of PCMC. The situation became tense as she lost her live and the police had to deploy additional force in the area to make sure that the situation does not go out of control. Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased have refused to accept her body till action is taken against PCMC officials. Her relatives are also demanding police to register a case of murder against PCMC officials.
