New Delhi: PV Sindhu, who recently clinched the silver medal in this year’s badminton World Championships, has been nominated for the Padma Bhushan award by the Sports Ministry on Monday. PV Sindhu became the second athlete after former Indian cricket team skipper MS Dhoni to be nominated for the award this year. The BCCI has only sent one name for the Padma awards this year and it was a unanimous decision to nominate Dhoni. Sindhu clinched the Indian Open title earlier this year and although she was defeated in the Glasgow World Championships final last month, the 22-year old became first Indian shuttler to lift Korea Open Super Series title after defeating Japan’s Nozumi Okuhara in the summit clash. She also jumped two places to the second spot in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) women’s singles rankings. Thanks to this nomination, PV Sindhu joins the elite club comprising of Saina Nehwal and Pullela Gopichand. The Hyderabad-based shuttler was conferred the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award -- the highest sporting honour in India -- in 2016 and the Padma Shri in 2015. Last year, PV Sindhu created history by becoming the first Indian shuttler to win an Olympic silver medal as she went down fighting against Carolina Marin in the gold medal match.
