Chicago: Shastri “Swami” Swaminathan, M.D., Westmont, was elected speaker of the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) during its recent annual meeting.
Dr. Swaminathan is a retired Chair of Psychiatry at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and currently a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine.
He has been a member of ISMS since 1990, serving as Trustee on the ISMS Board and as its President from 2008-2009. He currently sits on the Council on Economics. Dr. Swaminathan is also a past president of the Chicago Medical Society, the Indian American Medical Association and the Illinois Psychiatric Society. He serves as a member of the Illinois Delegation to the America Medical Association’s House of Delegates.
Dr. Swaminathan received his medical degree from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. He performed his residency at Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago and his internship at Cook County Hospital, Chicago.
Dr. Swaminathan’s term as ISMS speaker will run through April 2027.
