No match for this engg student's creativity

Passion differs from person to person. The hobby of this engineering student from a Coimbatore college is a case in point. She had developed an interest for writing all the 1,330 couplets from Tirukkural on matchsticks.

The girl, M. Abinaya, pursuing her final year BE (computer science) at Kovilpalayam Info Institute of Engineering located on the outskirts of the city, displayed the couplets written on matchsticks along with the chapter and couplet number legibly.

"The spark to do something unusual was in me right from my childhood. Though I was keen on penning poems and short stories on social themes during my school days at my native Dharapuram, it was my ardent desire to show my prowess in a different way," Abinaya said, adding that she spared time during night sitting for long hours writing on matchsticks.

"Patience is of paramount as far this art is concerned since it takes time to write the couplets on matchsticks using ink pen. I had to spend two months to finish this work amidst my academics," she said and added that her electronics department faculty Senthil Kumar encouraged and motivated her to take up this work. She was on cloud nine after getting accolades from the college management, principal and faculty members for her feat, which she felt was indeed recognition for her creative work. Abinaya said many youngsters had already exhibited their talent writing couplets from Tirukkural in different forms and on various objects. However, those exhibits could be seen only with the help of a magnifying glass. In my creation, the couplets are easily visible.

Looking back at her alma mater, Abinaya said it was her teachers at Ponnu Matriculation HSS, Dharapuram, and Adarsh Vidyalaya at Anthiyur, who tapped her talent during her school days. Now she had completed writing a book titled Jananayagam (Democracy) and is scouting for publishers to bringing out her maiden work.

If it fails to materialize, she said, she would publish it on her own with her father G. Mohan Kumar, junior agricultural officer, footing the bill.
