Stylist Tanya Ghavri shows how to put formal shorts to work for the next team meeting.
With the return of the 1990s, shorts of all sorts are becoming acceptable. And taking this a step further are formal shorts. But how do you wear the summer uniform to work without looking like you’re hinting towards a vacation? Stylist Tanya Ghavri shows it off for us.
Impress at an interview
When shorts go formal, you have the liberty to choose ones with defining details - piping, patterns, pocket details etc.
A bandhgala jacket can be brought out to play, along with a quilted sling bag.
Since meters of leg are on display, always choose heels with great elements — gladiators, buckles, straps, peep-toes, etc., that love centre stage.
A super formal bandhgala can also spruce up denim shorts, if they are your indispensable pair.
Make or break meeting
This is the perfect look to make an impression. Everything spells tack-sharp — the white shirt, nude clutch, beige shorts made of trouser material, pumps and the tailored jacket.
To make the shorts work-appropriate, choose ones with pleats, cuffs so that they look like mini trousers.
Wear them in the same color as you would trousers —shades of brown, grey, beige, black or pin stripe. Stopping two inches before the knees will keep them modest.
Club night
Quilted shorts and a sequined tee is a great combination for a night out. You can easily throw on a boyfriend jacket and turn up the make-up to get into party mode.
Alternatively, this is also a great outfit when hanging around in the mall. Instead of high-heels, go for complicated gladiators with small or wedge heels to give your feet a break.
Casual lunch
If you’re heading out to a working lunch, slip on the other season favorite — the boyfriend jacket. It’s great to throw over a ganji and high-waist shorts.
The key is to keep all the elements of formals — high waists, belts, sashes, blazers, minimal accessories, swept up hair and polished shoes.
Take off the jacket and you are ready to party.
