Columbus, OH: In a closely watched political development, Vivek Ramaswamy has secured the Republican nomination for Ohio governor, setting up a competitive general election against Democrat Amy Acton. The outcome of the primary solidifies Ramaswamy’s position as a leading Republican figure in the state and signals an intense campaign season ahead.

Ramaswamy, a wealthy biotech entrepreneur and former presidential candidate, entered the race with strong backing from Donald Trump as well as the Ohio Republican Party. His campaign gained further momentum after he stepped away from a role in Trump’s administration initiative focused on government efficiency. Trump’s public endorsement, including praise on social media, helped boost Ramaswamy’s visibility and support among Republican voters.

He defeated challenger Casey Putsch by a wide margin. Putsch, a political newcomer, attempted to position himself as a more conservative alternative but failed to gain significant traction, earning less than 20% of the vote. His campaign was also marked by controversial attacks, which did not resonate broadly with voters.

On the Democratic side, Acton secured her party’s nomination without opposition, alongside her running mate, David Pepper. Acton rose to prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic while serving as Ohio’s health director under Republican Governor Mike DeWine. Her leadership during that period earned both praise and criticism, with some Republicans labeling her “Dr. Lockdown” due to strict public health measures. DeWine, while endorsing Ramaswamy, has defended Acton’s role, emphasizing that key decisions were made by his office.

Despite Ohio’s recent Republican lean—no Democrat has won the governorship since 2006.

Ramaswamy has campaigned on reducing taxes, promoting energy reforms, and advancing education policies centered on parental rights. Meanwhile, Acton has focused on affordability issues and her personal story of overcoming hardship, drawing a sharp contrast with Ramaswamy’s business success and personal wealth.

With both candidates bringing distinct backgrounds and policy priorities, the November election is shaping up to be one of Ohio’s most closely watched gubernatorial contests in years.
