Charlotte, NC: A 44-year-old Indian-origin woman, Chandraprabha Singh, has been arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina, for allegedly attacking her husband with a knife during a heated argument over household chores. Singh, a teaching assistant at Endhaven Elementary School, was taken into custody by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on October 12 after officers responded to an assault report at her home on Foxhaven Drive in the Ballantyne area.

According to an arrest warrant cited by local news channel WBTV, Singh “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously” slashed her husband, Arvind Singh, on the neck, inflicting a serious but non-fatal injury. Police said the victim had already been taken to a nearby hospital by the time they arrived. He later told investigators that his wife attacked him intentionally after a dispute about cleaning the house.

In contrast, Chandraprabha Singh claimed the incident was accidental. She stated that she was preparing breakfast and turned around while holding a knife, unintentionally cutting her husband. Detectives from the department’s Domestic Violence Unit interviewed Singh before transferring her to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, where she was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

Initially, Singh was denied bond by a magistrate. However, during a court hearing on October 13, she was granted release on a $10,000 bond and assigned a public defender. The court ordered her to wear an electronic monitoring device and prohibited her from contacting or approaching her husband. Singh was released from jail on October 14 under these conditions.

Officials confirmed that the incident did not occur on school property and did not involve any students or staff members. Following her arrest, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools suspended Singh with pay pending further investigation. Records show she began working with the district as a lunchroom assistant in October 2023 and was promoted to teaching assistant for grades K–3 in August 2024.

Police are continuing their investigation and reviewing statements from both parties. Singh’s next court appearance is scheduled for October 30. Authorities have not disclosed the current medical condition of Arvind Singh, who continues to recover from his injuries. The case has drawn attention for its unusual domestic context and the alleged motive linked to household chores.
