Norfolk, VA: A 45-year-old woman from Gujarat, Meghnaben Patel, was shot dead in a brutal attack inside a supermarket in Norfolk, Virginia, United States, in an incident that has shocked both the Indian-American community and residents of her hometown in Gujarat. The killing, believed to have occurred during a suspected robbery attempt, was captured on the store’s surveillance cameras, providing investigators with crucial evidence as they continue their search for the gunman.
Patel, originally from Jantral village in Gujarat’s Mehsana district, had been living in the United States for more than a decade and had worked at the supermarket, identified as Fat Philly’s, for nearly 10 years. She was a familiar face at the store and was known for her dedication and hard work. She is survived by her husband, Upendrabhai Patel, and their two children, daughter Nakshiben and son Smith, who live in the United States. Her elderly parents, Karsanbhai Patel and Kapilaben, continue to reside in Jantral village.
The attack took place on May 23, 2026, when the supermarket was reportedly almost empty. CCTV footage that later surfaced online shows a masked man entering the store and calmly approaching the counter where Patel was standing. Dressed in a grey jacket, gloves, a hat, and animal-print or camouflage-style pants, the suspect appeared to pose as a customer. After a brief conversation with Patel, he suddenly pulled a handgun from his pocket and opened fire at close range.
The footage shows Patel collapsing behind the counter after being struck by the bullets. The assailant then climbed over the counter and allegedly fired additional shots before fleeing the store. As he escaped, several items were knocked to the floor. Some reports suggest the suspect may have taken an item before leaving, though authorities have not confirmed whether robbery was the primary motive behind the attack.
Police responded quickly to the scene after receiving reports of the shooting. The area was cordoned off, and investigators launched an extensive search operation. Special teams have been assigned to identify and apprehend the suspect, whose identity has not yet been made public. While authorities are examining the possibility of a robbery-related motive, they have not ruled out other lines of investigation.
The killing has left Patel’s family and community devastated. In Jantral village, news of her death spread rapidly, prompting an outpouring of grief from relatives, friends, and local residents. Members of the Indian-American community have also expressed shock and sorrow, while renewed concerns have emerged over the safety of immigrant workers employed in supermarkets, convenience stores, gas stations, and other retail businesses that often operate during late hours.
Patel’s death is the latest in a series of attacks involving Indian-origin retail workers in the United States, drawing attention to the risks many immigrants face while earning a livelihood abroad. As investigators continue their manhunt, family members and community leaders are calling for justice and stronger measures to protect frontline retail employees from violent crime.
