NEW YORK: The American dream of a young man from Punjab ended tragically when 28-year-old Gurdeep Singh was shot dead while delivering a pizza in Brooklyn, New York, on August 21. The unidentified shooter fled the scene, and police are investigating the killing, with an attempted robbery reportedly among the possible motives.
According to reports, Singh was making a delivery when he was shot in the chest. Police and emergency responders found him at the scene and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made, and investigators are examining surveillance footage and other evidence in an effort to identify the attacker.
Singh hailed from Jabowal village in Kapurthala district, Punjab. His sudden death has plunged his family and the local community into deep grief. His father, Pyara Lal, said his son had taken on substantial debt to travel to the United States, determined to work hard and provide a better life for his parents and family.
Singh had reportedly been living in the United States for several years and was working as a delivery partner in New York. His family said he had faced considerable hardships and worked long hours to repay debts and support those back home. Reports differ on the circumstances and year of his journey to the US, but his family said he had not returned to India for nearly nine years.
The tragedy has renewed concerns within the Punjabi and Indian-American communities about the safety of delivery workers, many of whom work late hours and enter unfamiliar neighborhoods while making deliveries.
The Consulate General of India in New York expressed deep sadness over Singh’s death and said it was in contact with his family and providing all possible assistance. His family has appealed for help in bringing his body back to India and urged authorities to make every effort to arrest the person responsible.
The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) also expressed concern and called for a thorough investigation. NAPA executive director Satnam Singh Chahal said the killing had devastated another family and stressed that repeated violence against young Punjabi and Sikh community members should not become accepted as an unavoidable reality.
As investigators continue examining CCTV footage and other evidence, Singh’s family and friends are waiting for answers. A young man who left Punjab in search of opportunity and a better future for his family has instead become the victim of a senseless act of violence, leaving his loved ones to mourn a life cut tragically short.
