Chicago: The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago, established in 1980, paid a heartfelt tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, popularly known as the Iron Man of India, on his 151st birth anniversary. The gathering celebrated his extraordinary contributions to India's freedom struggle, national integration and nation-building, while emphasizing the enduring values of unity, patriotism, courage and public service.

FIA executive Amar Upadhyay welcomed the attendees and opened the program with the national anthem. In his introductory remarks, he reflected on Sardar Patel's remarkable life, leadership and invaluable contributions to the country.

FIA President Hemant Patel highlighted several significant chapters of Sardar Patel's life. He noted that Patel had received 12 of the 15 votes in the Congress leadership selection process that preceded India's independence, potentially positioning him to become the country's first prime minister. However, he stepped aside following Mahatma Gandhi's wishes. Hemant Patel observed that India's subsequent history might have taken a different direction had Patel assumed the country's top leadership.

He particularly emphasized Sardar Patel's historic achievement of integrating 565 princely states into the Indian Union following independence, including Hyderabad and Junagadh, overcoming considerable resistance. He also recalled how Patel earned the title "Sardar" through his outstanding leadership of the Bardoli Satyagraha, a successful farmers' movement against the British government's increase in agricultural taxes. His courage, determination and organizational abilities transformed the movement into a landmark chapter in India's freedom struggle. Hemant Patel added a personal connection, noting that Bardoli and Dandi are located close to the region where he grew up.

Addressing the complicated history of India's Partition, Hemant Patel raised questions about the political choices and subsequent migration patterns of Muslims in 1947. Referring to historical accounts of the referendum in the North-West Frontier Province and the comparatively smaller proportion of Muslims who migrated to Pakistan, he suggested that the subject deserved further historical examination.

President Patel urged the community to draw inspiration from Sardar Patel's character and leadership, emphasizing that practicing his principles in everyday life would be the most meaningful tribute to the great national leader.

Jenifer Davis, a congressional candidate from Illinois' 8th District and owner of an IT company in Hyderabad, also attended. Recalling her experiences in India, she spoke about the country's remarkable development and transformation over the years. She also recognized the growing contributions of Indian Americans to American society. Hemant Patel highlighted their economic contributions, noting that Indian Americans contribute significantly to the nation's tax base despite representing a relatively small percentage of its population.

FIA Trustee Rakesh Malhotra called upon everyone to honor Sardar Patel through unity, integrity, community service and dedication to future generations. Indian Army Brigadier Navin Ahuja underscored the military's example of religious harmony, where people of different faiths serve together. Referring to the Sarva Dharma Sthal, he emphasized that a soldier's highest commitment is service to the nation.

Dipti Desai of Sewa International, FIA Vice President Rohit Joshi, Chirag Patel and veteran FIA executive Arvind Ankleshwaria also addressed the gathering, reinforcing the importance of unity and community involvement.

Following the speeches, participants took part in the 1K Unity Walk/Run. Winners Ami Mehta, Vinod Shah and Dipti Desai received awards from community leader and entrepreneur Sanjay Vora, Vasanti Patel and Arvind Ankleshwaria.

The event concluded with appreciation for the numerous volunteers who prepared and served fresh gota, tea and ganthiya. Their dedicated efforts, led by Vasanti Patel and supported by Shilpa Patel, Chhaya Bhavsar, Gurmeet Singh, FIA Vice President Bhavesh (Bob) Patel, Dipak (Dan) Patel and many other community members, created a warm atmosphere reminiscent of a final summer picnic.

The celebration served as a fitting reminder that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's message of national unity, collective responsibility and selfless service remains relevant for generations to come.
