Chicago: Chicago-based anesthesiologist Tripti C. Kataria has been elected president of the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) for the 2026–27 term, becoming the first woman of color to lead the organization. She officially began her tenure following the ISMS Annual Meeting after serving as president-elect.
State medical societies play an important role in shaping health policy, promoting patient safety, and supporting physician-led care. Dr. Kataria’s leadership ensures anesthesiology and perioperative medicine remain represented in statewide policy discussions.
Dr. Kataria has held several prominent leadership roles in organized medicine. She currently serves as vice chair of the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ Committee on Representation to the AMA and the Committee on Bylaws, while also contributing to committees on informatics, information technologies, and innovation. She is also a former president of the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists. Within the American Medical Association, she serves as chair of the Council on Legislation.
Practicing across the Chicago area, Dr. Kataria works at R1 RCM as manager of physician advisory solutions, level of care, and chart audits. Her work includes Medicare compliance consulting, medical necessity reviews, insurance appeals, and physician education for health systems nationwide. She also serves part-time with Professional Anesthesia Consultants.
Earlier in her career, Dr. Kataria served as medical director of anesthesiology at Sinai Health System and as assistant professor at the University of Chicago Medical Center. She earned degrees from the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.
