Houston, TX: Laughter is set to take center stage as Desi Comedy Fest, billed as America’s biggest South Asian comedy festival, makes its Texas debut in Houston on October 14. The opening performance will launch the festival’s first-ever Texas tour, bringing together five comedians for an evening of English-language stand-up at Punch Line Houston.
The Houston show, scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, at 7:30 p.m., will feature Sanjay Manaktala, Malay Vyas, Vishal Krishnasami, Abhay Nadkarni and Samson Koletkar. The lineup represents a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, reflecting the diverse voices of the South Asian diaspora in America.
The performers draw their material from everyday life, family relationships, immigrant experiences, cultural identity, careers and the often amusing differences between Indian and American society. Their stories promise to connect with audiences familiar with the challenges, traditions and humorous moments of life between cultures, while also welcoming anyone who enjoys quality stand-up comedy.
Among the featured performers, Sanjay Manaktala is an Indian-American comedian, writer and technology veteran whose comedy and digital content have attracted millions of views. Houston-based comedian Malay Vyas brings a local connection to the event, drawing on his experiences as an immigrant, father and engineer. Vishal Krishnasami, born in India and raised in North Carolina, explores the cultural experiences of growing up in the American South.
Festival co-creator Abhay Nadkarni, originally from Delhi and raised in Doha and Bangalore, brings an international perspective to his comedy. Samson Koletkar, another co-founder, combines his Indian upbringing, Jewish heritage and American experiences in a distinctive comedic style.
Founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2014 by Nadkarni and Koletkar, Desi Comedy Fest was created to showcase South Asian comedic talent and provide audiences with a shared live entertainment experience. Over the past 12 years, the festival has expanded through performances across the United States, Canada and India.
The Texas debut reflects the festival’s continuing expansion and its effort to bring South Asian comedy to new audiences. Houston, home to a large and diverse South Asian community, will serve as the first stop on the three-city tour. The festival will continue in Austin on October 15 before concluding in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on October 17.
Organizers say the Texas tour is an opportunity to highlight the many different perspectives within the South Asian community through humor, storytelling and cultural observation.
