Silicon Valley, CA: California’s 17th Congressional District is shaping up for a closely watched primary as Representative Ro Khanna faces a challenge from fellow Indian American and tech entrepreneur Ethan Agarwal in June 2026. The Silicon Valley-based district, known for its strong Democratic lean, is now the stage for an intra-party contest that has captured attention within the Indian American community and beyond.
Agarwal, who previously launched a bid for California governor, announced on X that he is entering the race to unseat Khanna. He sharply criticized the incumbent, accusing him of being “the most prolific Dem stock trader in the history of Congress.” Agarwal alleged that Khanna traded $55.7 million in stocks last year, outperforming the market by 13 percent, while publicly advocating policies such as a proposed California wealth tax. He also questioned Khanna’s role on the House Oversight Committee, suggesting a conflict of interest.
Pledging reform, Agarwal said he would divest his personal investments if elected and push for a ban on congressional stock trading, along with term limits. While acknowledging Khanna’s formidable $15 million campaign war chest, Agarwal argued the district needs a new direction in leadership, setting up a high-stakes primary showdown in the heart of Silicon Valley.
