New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Naftali Bennett on becoming the Prime Minister of Israel.
In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “Excellency @naftalibennett, congratulations on becoming the Prime Minister of Israel. As we celebrate 30 years of the upgradation of diplomatic relations next year, I look forward to meeting you and deepening the strategic partnership between our two countries. @IsraeliPM”
On Sunday, an alliance of Israel’s eight parties came together and ousted Benjamin Netanyahu, the country’s longest-serving Prime Minister, and formed a new government in the country’s turbulent politics.
Naftali Bennett, 49, is a right-wing Jewish nationalist and former tech millionaire. In his speech in the Knesset before the vote, Bennett promised the new government would be a coalition of ideologically divergent parties representing all of Israel.
He said after four inconclusive elections in two years, the country had been thrown “into a maelstrom of hatred and in-fighting”.
Bennett worked for Netanyahu as a senior aide between 2006 and 2008. He left Netanyahu’s Likud party after his relationship with the former Prime Minister soured.
After he entered politics, Bennett aligned himself with the rightwing national religious Jewish Home Party, and entered Parliament as its representative in 2013.
He is known for being a strong advocate of the Jewish nation state, and for insisting on Jewish historical and religious claims to the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, territory near the Israel-Syria border that Israel has occupied since the 1967 war.
