Hambantota, Sri Lanka: Pawan Shah created history on July 25 as the Indian U-19 cricket team player slammed the second highest individual score in Youth Tests against Sri Lanka.
The 18-year old, who hails from Pune, scored 282 off 332 balls thanks to 33 fours and one six. The record currently belongs to Australia’s Clinton Peake who scored an unbeaten 304 against India at Melbourne in March 1995.
Thanks to this brilliant performance, Pawan Shah also became the second Indian batsman to score a double century in Youth Tests.
The first one to achieve this feat was Tanmay Srivastava, who had scored 220 against Pakistan in Peshawar in September 2006. That game also featured the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Piyush Chawla and Ishant Sharma.
Resuming on 177, Shah continued to play freely against the Sri Lanka bowling attack and the youngster slammed six consecutive boundaries in an over as India posted a mammoth 613 for 8 in Hambantota.
The last time six boundaries were hit in an over in any form of international representative cricket was way back in 1982, when Sandeep Patil did the same against Bob Willis in Manchester in 1982. However, Willis had bowled seven balls in that particular over, including a no-ball.
Shah added 263 runs for the second wicket with left-handed opener Atharva Taide (177) and another 167 runs with Nikhil Wadhera (64). Atharva had also scored a hundred in the Youth Test.
