No permits for meat shops in Gurgaon’s residential areas

Gurgaon: Licenses to set up meat shops in residential areas will no longer be issued in Gurgaon, with Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar giving a verbal order to this effect on Sunday.
The direction was issued at the monthly meeting of the District Grievances Committee, when the topic of the increasing clamor for removal of meat shops, and complaints submitted in this regard, came up. “No licenses should be issued for new meat shops in residential areas of Gurugram,” Khattar said.
The term “residential area” will be defined as per the master plan, said officials from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG). “The master plan classifies areas as designated residential ones and designated commercial ones, and in executing the direction also, these will be the definitions taken into consideration,” said V. Umashankar, MCG commissioner.
Sources in the civic body reiterated this point, adding that as of now, “there are no authorized meat shops running in residential areas”. “Those that are operating are doing so without the requisite permissions and license,” a source said.
Khattar’s direction comes against the backdrop of political parties such as the Shiv Sena and the Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Kranti Dal demanding closure of such shops in Gurgaon increasingly often, either permanently or temporarily during festivals.
Recently, workers of the both parties had visited markets in several parts of the city and “requested” meat shop owners to shut shop for the duration of Navratri. The parties had initially submitted letters to the district administration, asking that such shops be directed to close till Navratri was over but their requests went unheard.
In May, the Haryana government had also initiated a crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses and meat markets in the state, as a result of which 600 meat shops in Gurgaon had been closed.
