MP govt. to spend Rs. 23,000 crore to woo farmers

Bhopal: With the state government announcing new schemes for the benefit of farmers following violent protests, it is likely to end up spending Rs. 23,000 crore on farm welfare in the current financial season, against the target of Rs. 18,000 crore. The announcements and the amount involved has baffled the cash-strapped finance department which has already announced a severe cut in welfare schemes of other departments.
Officials in the agriculture welfare department said that government is already spending Rs. 35,000 crore to 40,000 crore on farmers under various welfare schemes and programs. After the recent sops, expenditure on individual schemes would reach up to Rs. 23,000 crore a year which would put an additional burden of Rs. 5,000 crore on the state exchequer.
