India-Australia MoU for cooperation in urban water management gets Union Cabinet nod

New Delhi (India News Network): The Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi On Wednesday approved the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Technical Cooperation in Urban Water Management between India and Australia.
It was signed between the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) of India and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of Australia in December of 2021.
According to a n official release, the MoU was signed under the aegis of the Australia-India Water Security Initiative (AIWASI) launched at the 4th World Water Summit in New Delhi in 2020.
The initiative was developed under the framework of the Australia-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to fulfill both countries’ commitment to increase water security cooperation. It also highlights how important water security is to Australia and India, the release noted.
Furthermore, the MoU will strengthen bilateral collaboration in the field of urban water security between the two nations by improving the access, affordability, and quality of water. It would also promote a circular economy of water and water-secure cities.
The Memorandum of Understanding will also encourage climate-resilient water management practices, community participation in water management, and social acceptance through measures for accessible infrastructure.
According to the release, the MoU will allow both parties to learn about technical achievements made by two countries in crucial areas of urban water security, as well as foster learning, best practices, and institutional capacity building. This will contribute to Aatmanirbhar Bharat’s realization.
