Humble dhoti gets uber glam avatar

They say style never goes out of fashion, and with a little stitch here and there, some things get better with time. The humble dhoti which originated ages back in India is now ruling the global fashion scenario with a little twist called dhoti pants. Fashionistas across the globe are going gaga over these comfy pants that are high on style and can be teamed up with various options.

In the 1980s, it was for the first time when Bollywood diva Madhuri Dixit glamorized dhoti-pants on the silver screen, and since then these cuties are evolving every season as harem pants or draped salwars.

Designer Anand Kabra swears by these pants and says: “They are in vogue this season as they are fashionable as well as comfortable. You can pair them with a chic top and get a semi-casual look or simply team them up with a kurti to get an Indo-Western fusion look.”

Designer Tania Khanuja also gives a thumbs-up to this style and feels that one can experiment with various fabrics when it comes to draping these pants. She says: “A lot of girls use old saris and highlight thick borders by draping them as stylish dhoti salwars. The trend of drapes is really catching up this season and one can experiment with flowy fabrics to get really chic draped pants. These pants are best paired with body hugging long tops and short kurtis.”

A lot of college girls are also fascinated by these stylish pants and feel they can mix and match a lot of things to get multiple combinations.

Sonia Mishra, a DU student says: “I recently invested in stylish khadi dhoti-pants and I love wearing them to college. I can wear them with T-shirts and use trendy accessories like belts and chappals to get a semi-casual look. Or I can wear them with a traditional kurti and make it look like a modified version of salwar kameez.”
