Godhra verdict: 31 accused convicted, 63 acquitted

Ahmedabad: A special fast track court in Ahmedabad on February 22 convicted 31 accused and acquitted 63 in 2002 Godhra train burning case.

The 31 accused have been convicted of criminal conspiracy. Five accused out of those 31 have been convicted as the key conspirators.

Special Public Prosecutor J.M. Panchal said that the court upheld the conspiracy theory and said the conspiracy was to set the train on fire.

Nine years after the carnage took place, designated judge P. R. Patel delivered the verdict in the massacre that killed 59 people.

However, the key conspirator Maulvi Omerjee has been acquitted. While, other prominent accused Haji Billa and Rajjak Kurkur were convicted.

Scientific evidence, statement of witnesses, circumstantial and documentary evidence placed on record formed the basis of the judgment.
