Denied dowry, magistrate beats up would-be wife

Dewas (MP): A judicial magistrate allegedly assaulted his bride-to-be, under the influence of liquor, after her family refused to give in to his dowry demands, police said.

The Kotwali police here registered a case against magistrate Inder Singh Malaviya from Shahdol, who demanded Rs. one lakh in cash and a Maruti car on December 1 night from the girl’s family, in a drunken condition, they said.

The case was registered after a complaint was filed by Monica Solanki, whom Malaviya was to wed.

In her complaint, Monica said Malaviya came to her house in an inebriated state and demanded dowry from her family. When they refused to give in to his demands, he even slapped her and threatened to take her away forcibly.

After the incident, the proposed marriage was called off.
