Washington, Sep 25 (IANS) Thirty-five US lawmakers have called for bilateral talks between India and Pakistan to help keep peace and security in Kashmir in the wake of abrogation of Article 370.
In a letter to Kelly Craft, US ambassador to the United Nations, the lawmakers urged him for initiatives to reduce tension between two nuclear-powered nations.
According to reports in Pakistani media, the lawmakers expressed concern over the situation in Kashmir Valley after removal of special status.
“We write out of concern with the recent activity in the Kashmir region, amid increasing tensions between India and Pakistan, both having nuclear capabilities. Maintaining peace and stability in this region is a matter of global security,” they wrote.
“In late July and early August, India moved 45,000 troops into the Kashmir region. Upon removing the special status on August 5, residents’ freedom of movement and communication were suspended. We are encouraged by recent reports that restrictions have begun to be uplifted,” they said.
They urged Craft to let them know what actions the UN Mission and the administration would take to prevent further escalation of the conflict between India and Pakistan. “We appreciate your attention to these concerns and stand ready to assist you in any way as you represent the US at the UN.” the lawmakers said.
