SAARC to get first woman secretary general

 

Kathmandu: The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is set to get its first woman secretary general, Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed — a 36-year-old Maldivian lawyer. after the present chief, Indian diplomat Sheel Kant Sharma, completes his three-year term on February 28.

The SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu has confirmed that former attorney general of the Maldives, Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed, will be appointed SAARC secretary general on March 1.

Bangladesh Foreign Ministry sources said Maldives had recommended Fathimath Dhiyana for the post during the 16th SAARC summit in Thimphu, Bhutan, last April.
