Press Release
CHICAGO — The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago lived up to this year’s tagline, “Nothing but Patriotic Festivities,” delivering a vibrant and meaningful celebration that united the community in national pride. With the Tiranga Car Rally, a Patriotic Gala, and a grand finale parade, the FIA aimed to rekindle nationalistic pride—and according to many, they succeeded.
“Our goal was to ignite patriotic emotion, but the real measure of success lies with the community, not us,” said FIA President Hemant Patel.
This year’s parade was widely hailed as one of the best in recent memory. Devon Avenue came alive with cheers, color, and camaraderie. Crowds lined the streets, waving both Indian and American flags, as 13 beautifully decorated floats, 5 classic vehicles, 16 walking groups, and 2 dynamic bands marched by in a show of unity and cultural pride. For the first time in FIA history, local businesses, politicians, and organizations proudly walked with banners, symbolizing solidarity and participation across all sectors.
Though the Indian population has been steadily shifting toward Chicago’s western suburbs, attendance remained impressive—proof of the community’s enduring connection to Devon and its traditions.
FIA trustees and executives proudly wore tri-color jackets, resembling a national uniform, and local businesses enhanced the festive mood by distributing drinks, giveaways, and dressing in patriotic hues. Chants of “Bharat Mata ki Jai!” and “Long Live America!” echoed throughout the route, showcasing the dual pride of the Indian-American identity.
A notable highlight was a float commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, featuring a striking 6-foot portrait and a 15-foot banner reading “WE ARE ONE”—a powerful message of unity and respect for India’s Ironman.
The event was not just a celebration—it was a tribute. A tribute to India’s freedom fighters, to shared values, and to the community spirit that fuels these gatherings. As one social media post put it:
“The streets of Devon came alive with vibrant colors, music, and the spirit of community.”
Another added: “The old FIA spirit is back!”
Perhaps most remarkable, the event drew crowds without the presence of a Bollywood celebrity—proving that people still show up for love of the nation. As organizers emphasized, if patriotism requires celebrity draw, its purpose is diluted. The event’s success underscores the power of unity and genuine community involvement.
The parade began at Devon & Western and concluded at Devon & California, ending with Garba, a traditional Gujarati dance that brought joy and cultural flair to the celebration. The Indian national flag was led by Dr. Santosh Kumar, accompanied by trustees, executives, and community leaders—symbolizing a community-first, not individual-first, approach.
Announcers Trustee Sanhita Agnihotri and President Hemant Patel enthusiastically welcomed floats, introduced participants, and offered heartfelt thanks. The event was further uplifted by a speech from the Honorable Somnath Ghosh, Consul General of India, who inspired the crowd with words of unity and pride.
“If we keep the nation at the center—not our names, egos, certificates, or expectations—community support is guaranteed. The country must always come first,” Patel emphasized.
