Jallikattu: 19-year-old spectator mauled to death by bull in Madurai event

Madurai: A 19-year-old spectator was gored to death during a Jallikattu event organized at Palamedu, one of the main arenas of Jallikattu, in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu on January 15.
According to police, more than 25 people were injured including six who suffered injuries and remain being treated at the hospital. The deceased, S Kalimuthu, was a youth who came from Sanarpatti in Dindigul to witness the annual event. “There were some 1000 bulls registered for the event on Monday. Kalimuthu was attacked by the bull at the finishing point where owners receive the bulls after the run. He was a spectator,” an officer said.
The event organized under strict restrictions has had guests such as the state revenue minister R B Udayakumar, president of Jallikattu Peravai P Rajasekar. The entire event was monitored by a team of police and revenue officials headed by Madurai district collector K Veera Raghava Rao. Palamedu is one of the three prominent Jallikattu events in Tamil Nadu besides Alanganallur and Avaniyapuram.
The top court, which refused to put a stay on the practice had reprimanded the state government for failing to maintain the law and order situation during recent protests in the state.
