Indians clinch two golds in Asian Youth Boxing Championship


New Delhi, Mar 11 : Vikas Krishnan (60kg) and Naveen Kumar (81kg) clinched gold medals, while three other Indian pugilists settled for silver at the Asian Youth Boxing Championships in Tehran.

The Indian team finished runners-up at the Championships.

Among the Indian boxers who lost their final bouts were Devendro (48kg), Venkat Giddi Nagarjun (57kg) and Sumit Sangwan (75kg), the Indian Boxing Federation (IBF) said in a statement.

The Indian team posted a healthy tally of 28 points to finish second behind Kazakhstan (34 points).

The first boxer to take the ring for India was Devendro and was humiliated 0-5 by Masoud Rigi of Iran. Nagarjun also went down 2-10 to Yerkin Duisenbayev of Kazakhstan, it said.

But Vikas brought back the cheers in the Indian camp after beating Phonwirat Patiyhangkho of Thailand 4-0.

Sumit lost to China”s Yihhang Wen 0-4 but Naveen ensured that India ended the day on a high as he edged past Aolih Zhang of China 4-2.

India had earlier won four bronze medals through their losing semifinalists.
