Fresh violence by protesters in J&K
Jammu: Fresh violence erupted in Jammu region on August 22 with angry protesters attacking two police stations in Poonch and Kathua. The army, meanwhile, staged a flag march on August 22.
Curfew was clamped in the border town of Hiranagar in Kathua district after protesters turned violent following arrest of a youth and torched a truck parked in the police station complex.
Six people were injured as police fired tear-gas shells and cane charged the protesters who forcibly released the youth from the police station.
Army has been deployed and they have staged a flag march in the town to restore peace and normalcy, she said.
Authorities continued night curfew in Jammu and Udhampur districts as a precautionary measure in the wake of the Amarnath land stir while it was relaxed for varying periods in Samba and Kishtwar towns.
Rallies were taken out in Gangyal, Bishnah, Bakshi-nagar, Shaktinagar, Canal Road, Miran Sahib, R.S. Pura, Samba, Kathua Trikutanagar, Satwari and Udhampur areas as the agitation by the Sri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti continued for the 54th day.
Meantime, the separatist Hurriyat Conference is all set for another “show of strength” through a rally on August 22, which has led to closure of shops and schools in this summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, ending a three-day break from shutdowns. Shops and other businesses, educational institutions and private offices were closed as traffic was off the roads in view of the call to march to the Eidgah prayer grounds in Srinagar by two factions of the Hurriyat Conference.
