Rohtak: Former hockey player Ajit Pal Nandal on May 31 adopted 21 girl students of government school in his native Bohar village in the district.
Nandal said he would take care of their education, train them in sports and pay for their expenses on equipment and fees related to sports tournaments.
The village school had identified 21 girls from Classes 6 to 12 who come from a humble background for adoption. Nandal said he would take care of these girls for their entire school years.
Nandal, who runs a state-of-the-art gymnasium and a stud farm in Rohtak, said other girl students of the school who wanted to train in sports were welcome in his academy free of cost as well.
He said he received the inspiration to adopt girls from cricketer Gautam Gambhir.
Rohtak SP Pankaj Nain, who was the chief guest at the program organized to mark the adoption, said girls have ten times better potential than boys in all aspects, and people only needed to identify their talent and show them the right path.
He said the district police had already adopted Bohar village to put the youth on the right direction. The Rohtak village is notorious for crime.
