Assam Guv informed of measures taken after hooch tragedy

Guwahati, Mar 15 (PTI) Assam Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya Friday called on Governor Jagdish Mukhi to apprise him of the measures taken by his department following the hooch tragedy that claimed 158 lives in Jorhat and Golaghat districts in February.
The minister said a widespread campaign has been launched throughout the state to create an awareness against consumption of the local drink ‘sulai’ which the victims had drunk last month.
The governor asked the minister to initiate awareness campaigns at all levels especially in the tea garden areas to empower people and ensure that spurious liquor was not brewed, an official release said.
Mukhi also said the State Anti-Drug and Prohibition Council must be reactivated to spread awareness activities and highlight the evil effects of liquor consumption.
The governor stated that not only ‘sulai’ but other intoxicating liquors also take a toll on human health.
He asked the minister to involve religious groups and NGOs for creating awareness on the evil effects of consuming ‘sulai’ or other liquors.
He also emphasized on organizing debates and symposiums in educational institutions and motivational campaigns at public places like markets and bus stands, the release said.
